Welcome to A Minute In The Life: Take2.
The goal of this project is rather simple: to convince as many people as possible to take pictures within the same minute in time and send them to me via e-mail. After I have collected, sorted through and labeled all of these pictures, I will post them here.
On Saturday, the 16th of May, between 2:00 and 2:01 PM Eastern Daylight Time, I would like you to grab your digital camera -- or 35mm, pinhole, Polaroid, camera phone, etc. -- and take two pictures. The first picture should be of whatever you are looking at when the minute arrives. The second should be taken immediately after the first, but in the opposite direction.
Whether your preference is to meticulously set up a shot or capture something spontaneously matters not -- the idea is to catch whatever you happen to be doing at this specific minute in time.
I have certain expectations for this project, but alas, I am only one man. It will not get off the ground -- or reach the level I would like it to, anyway -- if the word is not spread rather aggressively. If you know someone with a camera in Boise, Berlin, Beirut or Beijing, tell them about this site (and tell them to tell their friends). The more photographs I receive and the more time zones / locations I receive them from, the better.
----
01. If you would like to participate in “A Minute In The Life,” your only assignment is to take two pictures on May 16th, 2009 at 2:00 PM ET and e-mail them to me.
02. Please include the location of where the shots were taken. If you would like to include anything more than that -- i.e. your name, the subject, a brief description, etc. -- feel free.
03. There is no requirement as far as picture size, format, resolution, etc., as I may end up re-formatting them to fit the space allotted.
04. If you have a blog or website of your own, linking here to spread the word is strongly encouraged.
----
Should you have any questions, or if you'd like to let me know that you plan on participating, please e-mail me. I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible.

The Basics
To avoid any and all confusion, the following is a list of the basic guidelines for A Minute In The Life: Take Two.
01. Set a reminder on your cell phone, Outlook calendar, etc., or if you'd like me to e-mail you a few days before, send me your address and I'll add your name to the reminder list.
02. Take both pictures at 2:00 PM Eastern Time on May 16, 2009. If you are not on the East Coast, please click here for a Time Zone Map which should let you known when your picture should be taken (i.e. 11:00 AM in Los Angeles, 8:00 PM in Rome, etc.).
03. E-mail the pictures to aminuteinthelife@gmail.com whenever you get a chance -- they do not have to be sent to me right away. If it takes a few days for you to upload the pictures and e-mail them to me, fine. I will post them as I get them.
04. Include the location of your shots, and if you'd like to tell me more than that, feel free... but please be aware that any additional information you provide may be shared with the world. I will not include your name unless you ask me to.
05. Tell your friends!

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I am in a time zone other than EDT?
Please click here for a map of time zones that indicates when your picture should be taken.
What will happen with the pictures once I send them to you? Will you claim copyright?
Please click here for more information.
What happens if you get hundreds and hundreds of pictures from all over the world?
That would be awesome, but I guess that doesn't answer your question. What I do with the pictures will depend on how many I actually receive. If the response is great, I may explore the possibility of putting together a book. One step at a time, however...
Is there any format you would prefer in regards to the actual pictures?
A .jpg or .tif would be ideal, but I can most likely work with whatever you send me, so don't worry about messing with your camera settings or anything like that.
What if I take my picture with a 35mm camera?
That's fine, as long as you can make a note of which roll/frame was taken at the "project" time (and, of course, have access to a scanner).
What if I want a reminder closer to the actual "event"?
I encourage everyone to make a note of it on their personal calendar, cell phone, forehead, etc., but your best bet would be to give me your address and I will send you a reminder.
If I have a blog or a website of my own, can I put a link on there to your site?
Absolutely. In fact, I'd prefer it if you put multiple links on your site...but that might be a bit much.
Can I forward this information to anyone I want?
Yes. If you know someone overseas and would like them to know about it, that would make my day.
When do I need to send you the pictures I take?
Whenever you get a chance. I imagine it will take at least a few days for pictures to trickle in, so there's no major rush. Depending on how many I receive, I may post multiple "collections"...
What if I find an error on your site or notice something that doesn't quite make sense?
E-mail me right away and I will do my best to fix it. There are two issues that have already been resolved -- or should be, anyway -- due to someone e-mailing me and pointing it out. Any help you can provide is much appreciated.
If I e-mail you, how can I trust that my address will be safe?
I can guarantee you that your e-mail address will not be used for any purpose other than sending you a reminder and/or picture transmittal. Trust me.
If I send you a picture, will you post my name with it?
Not unless you specifically ask me to. If you would like to include more information -- other than location, that is -- I think that's great, but I will not add anything unless you give me the OK.
Angelina Jolie recently produced something similar to this entitled "A Moment In The World" -- are you trying to rip her off or what?!
First of all, I will be completely honest in saying that I had not heard of Jolie's project until someone e-mailed me about it. Secondly, I think this project will be unique in the sense that hers was done through live-action film, while mine will be focused on still photography.
If this bit of information deters you from participating, so be it...but I do think the two will be quite different.
If you didn't know about Jolie's project, where did the title "A Minute In The Life" come from?
I remember a coffee-table book my parents used to have -- and probably still have, actually -- entitled "A Day In The Life Of America," in which professional photographers were dispatched around the country to capture what was happening in even the smallest of towns. I always thought it was interesting, and even though that particular book didn't drive this project, I did think something along those lines would act as a good title.

2007 -- Success!
The target date and time has now passed, and I want to thank everyone who has submitted -- or plans on submitting after they upload, develop, etc. -- for being part of my project. I have received about 80 pictures so far and anticipate many more.
I am in the process of creating a gallery for the submissions. Please check back in the next couple of days -- I will post a link when it's ready.*
ML
*If you have not sent me your picture by the time I post the gallery, do not worry -- I will update whenever I receive anything new...

A Minute In The Life: The Simultaneous Photography Project has been circulating the internet for a little less than four weeks, and the response has been pretty great so far. This site has seen more than 2,000 visits, and I am pleased to announce that the project has the potential to go very international.
In addition to visitors from most states in the U.S., the word has also been spread to Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Burkina Faso, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, North Korea, Kuwait, New Zealand, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sudan, Switzerland, Trinidad & Tobago and The United Arab Emirates.
Thank you to everyone that has had a hand in keeping this information moving, as this project would not go anywhere without your help. Please continue to spread the word, and I look forward to everyone's submissions...

Copyright Issues
The logistical and legal aspect of this project is one that I will admit is still not quite in my grasp. It has been brought to my attention that a link to this site has been posted on a photography forum, which means that many viewers / visitors are professionals and are very serious about their craft and product (which, obviously, is understandable).
I have done some research and found that, according to the Copyright Act of 1976, a transfer of copyright must be in writing and accompanied by a signature. What it also states, however, is this:
A "compilation" is a work formed by the collection and assembling of preexisting materials or of data that are selected, coordinated, or arranged in such a way that the resulting work as a whole constitutes an original work of authorship. The term "compilation" includes collective works.
The rest of the article can be found here.
With that having been established, all images sent to "A Minute In The Life" will remain copyright of the photographer, but will be posted on this website under "fair use" and be given the credit of the photographer, when applicable.
If the response to this project is overwhelming and it appears as though putting together a book is a legitimate possiblity, I will then pursue written permission from each photographer.
Thank you, and please check back for updates, as this may be an ever-changing post.
